Titans win thriller against Indians to go top of IPL table

It came down to the final ball in Mumbai on Tuesday, and it was the visitors who emerged with a crucial three-wicket victory.

Gujarat Titans won an instant classic against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, flexing their title credentials while going top of the 2025 IPL table.

MI came into the contest on a six-match win streak and fell just short of making it seven in a row when Hardik Pandya missed a shot at the stumps on the final ball with the scores level.

Priced as -144.93 favorites to win across cricket bookmakers, the hosts stuttered their way to 155/8 courtesy of tight bowling by Rashid Khan (1/21), Gerald Coetzee (1/10) and Arshad Khan (1/18), who all conceded six runs per over or less.

Will Jacks (53 from 35) was the highlight for Mumbai, with the English international receiving company from Suryakumar Yadav (35 from 24) before Corbin Bosch (27 from 22) guided the tail.

After losing Sai Sudharsan (5 from 5) early, GT gained the upper hand in their chase of 156 through healthy contributions from Shubman Gill (43 from 46), Jos Buttler (30 from 27) and Sherfane Rutherford (28 from 15).

Gujarat’s target was reduced to 147 when rain interrupted play and knocked an over off their time in the middle.

That set the stage for a thrilling final over where GT needed 15 runs from six balls with four wickets in hand.

Two of the first three balls went to the rope, slashing the requirement to four runs from three balls, which quickly became scores level off the back of a no-ball and two singles.

Needing one run from the next two balls, Deepak Chahar clinched the wicket of Coetzee on the penultimate delivery, sending the match to a deciding ball with new batsman Arshad Khan on strike.

Given a full ball outside off, Arshad cracked a drive straight to Hardik at mid-off and took off for a single, giving the MI skipper a look at all three stumps to secure the run-out and victory.

He missed, Arshad skidded over the line, and GT won by three wickets to go top of the table.

“A lot of emotions,” Titans captain Gill said afterward.

“Most of them were frustrating because at one point, we were so ahead.

“But then four overs of play, 20 runs for four wickets, it felt like one of those Test sessions that do not go your way.

“The universe gave us another chance, and everything worked out in the end.

“A match where it goes till the last ball, every contribution becomes crucial.

“Sherfane, all the bowlers, the small, small things in the field — those are the moments that make a big difference.

“Even after a game like this, where it was so chaotic, it is wins like this that get you through a tournament like the IPL.”

Despite the loss, Mumbai remain favorites to win the 2025 IPL title, paying +250 at Stake.com.

Leading bookmakers have Gujarat on the third line of betting at +300, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (+275) sandwiched between the two.
